Interiors Photographer based in London & Cambridge

I am an interiors photographer based in London & Cambridge, working for interior designers, developers, architects, museums & art galleries.

I do specialise in different areas of interiors photography, with particular experience in photographing contemporary home interiors, art gallery interiors, historic interiors and luxury interior design. I also photograph retail interiors for Nike and Asics together with hotel and restaurant interior photography.

When I am approaching an interiors project I may work with an interior designer or stylist to help dress the interior and also to help with art direction.

I will create details as well as room shots which convey a sense of what it feels like to be actually in the room. Often emphasising certain materials, pieces of furniture, colours, textures, wallpaper, artwork and pets + people in the image.

Technically, it is often challenging to be an interiors photographer as I have to balance exterior and interior light levels. For example coping with colour casts from internal lights and retaining the exposure for the exterior light to make the interior look as natural as possible.

I use additional lighting as a ‘fill’ to help me lift the shadows where necessary. Also to remove colour casts from reflected light from outside.

I prefer when possible to keep all the lights off and create beautiful naturally lit interiors.

It’s important to consider how the image could be used both in print and online. Allowing enough space in a portait image for titles for example. Enabling an image to be considered for use as a front cover or a double page spread in a magazine. I have been widely published in both trade and consumer magazines.

I am a principle photographer for the Historic Royal Palaces and occasionally work for the National Trust photographing interiors. Therefore I understand how to operate in very delicate and sensitive interior in a safe manner. Using techniques from conservation photography to avoid the camera or tripod/stands touching surfaces.

If you are interested in interiors photography I do arrange workshops which combine the history of notable interior photographers, professional practice while shooting interiors & the post production process.

Although I was trained to get it right on film, with digital the post production process is really important. It helps to shoot on medium format with 16 bit colour for smooth graduations and the sharpness of Rodenstock lenses. Combined with my retouching skills I am able to produce images which will have enduring appeal for years to come. They really are very important to my clients.
