Dance Photographer based in London & Cambridge

I am a dance photographer working in London mostly and also occasionally locally in Cambridge where I do workshops in the fantastic Storey’s Field Community Centre. My favourite studios in London are ‘Park Village’ and ‘Holborn’.

I was first introduced to capturing movement/dance through an architectural commission to photograph the new home of Rambert in 2014 by Allies & Morrison. It was then I met the artistic director, Mark Baldwin, rehearsal director Angela Towler and dancers in the company.

They were very generous and allowed me to bring in Profoto lighting, manfrotto triple wind up stands and mega booms. I was able to position lights to start experimenting with capturing movement at 1/1000th of a second.

Since these early shoots, which combined volume of interiors with dance I have progressed and seem to shoot closer. Originally I shot on my Arca Swiss F Metric with Rodenstock lenses. Quite a rigorous and unusual way to work. It’s not a camera you look through, in many ways it was all engaging, because I could keep both eyes on the dancer and I found they felt more connected also.

I have since settled on using a Leica S medium format system with central shutter lenses. The Leica is such a solid camera which excellent tethering and battery power. Also it never overheats. The leaf shutters help me achieve a high flash sync. It’s probably the best choice for me at the moment although I’m thinking of doing another shoot with the monorail camera as it has such amazing compositional control. I can shoot low and perspectively correct dancers as I would buildings. So there is an overlap in styles here.

I often set up shoots myself using studios which have infinity coves or interesting interiors. Unless I have a commission, I feel the need to collaborate and will try to find a way to fund the rental costs. It’s important to continue exploring light and movement. I’m always interested to meet someone new and hopefully help them with their journey. Working with Mthuthuzeli November was a good example, I met him when he first arrived from South Africa and we did a shoot together. Since he has become an award winning dancer and choreographer.

I enjoy helping dance companies promote their tours. I also sell fine art print through Saatchi Art and on this web-site. It was a particular privilege to photograph rehearsals during the last Richard Alston tour.

I also shoot interiors with dancers, please check out here
