I am an architectural photographer based in London and Cambridge working throughout the UK & internationally.
‘My main role is to help both large and small architectural practices raise their profiles. Through carefully composed and illuminated architectural images’.
‘Architectural photography is dynamic, the light and movement of people is constantly changing around you. I find it endlessly fascinating. Often I will set up a composition and use that to allow people to enter the scene. Very much like creating a stage set in the theatre. For me there a parallels with performance arts when photographing buildings.’
Travel is part of being an architectural photographer. I mainly work in the UK and frequently travel to Europe and further afield. I have several good clients in New York and am always pleased to work for new international clients as well ask UK practices.
Patience is important but sometimes I have to react quickly to changing light or perhaps a certain person or group of people moving through a frame. As an architectural photographer I correct perspective using an Arca Swiss F Metric camera with Rodenstock lenses.
I am very aware of colour, form, proportion, texture & light in my architectural images. I like using silhouettes. Drawing the eye more into the frame.
I draw upon my training as a designer within my photography. I studied as a Product Designer at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
Creating architectural images is about compressing three dimensional forms into a two dimensional image. The opposite of what I was doing as a student, as we were drawing in 2d to create 3d models. It is quite a sculptural process in reverse, the final image should be considered as a unique piece in itself.
This process gets even more exciting when producing video clips. My clients use these on the web, for social media and even for award entries.’
I also take interior images so please take alook at my interior photography
If you are interested in the photography of architecture do reach out as I occasionally arrange workshops. I enjoy taking a small group of photographers to an interesting building to explore photographic techniques and approaches. We discuss influencers in architectural photography such as Ezra Stoller (my favourite) Julius Shulman, Thomas Ruff, Robert Frank & Andreas Gursky. At the end of the workshop we may arrange a pop up exhibition. Seeing the work printed is beneficial for understanding how buildings are communicated.
