Since these early shoots, which combined volume of interiors with dance I have progressed and seem to shoot closer. Originally I shot on my Arca Swiss F Metric with Rodenstock lenses. Quite a rigorous and unusual way to work. It’s not a camera you look through, in many ways it was all engaging, because I could keep both eyes on the dancer and I found they felt more connected also.
I have since settled on using a Leica S medium format system with central shutter lenses. The Leica is such a solid camera which excellent tethering and battery power. Also it never overheats. The leaf shutters help me achieve a high flash sync. It’s probably the best choice for me at the moment although I’m thinking of doing another shoot with the monorail camera as it has such amazing compositional control. I can shoot low and perspectively correct dancers as I would buildings. So there is an overlap in styles here.
